after years of appearances on compilations and as a group member, composer and improvisor jeff snyder has released his debut album, sunspots, on carrier records. much like the actual phenomena of sunspots - cyclical, chaotic, and powerful - snyder’s album invokes the sense that there are underlying forces at work which do not easily conform to human expectation or yield to human analysis. this is pure electronic music, meant for loudspeakers.

delsins reissue arm once again looks to the revered back catalogue of lost trax for a second 12 that picks out the best of the anonymous collectives work. the ep features five cuts taken from two highly sought after eps released on tabernacle records in 2011 and 2012. the eye opens things up with punchy drum programming and the sort of sci-fi effects and synths that immediately take you to a future intergalactic world. its a weighty but emotional opener, while pulp is more twisted and urgent, with warped synth sounds and busy, bristling drums and perc all building pressure throughout. the forest resets the mood with mystic synths and mysterious atmospheres that mix ambient beauty with suggestive skeletal beats. b01 then canes through the cosmos on a detroit electro tip with slithers of synth, swollen pads and crisp hits and dominion rounds things out in hurried fashion. the restless electro drums pound away as prickly snares and cymbals, blurts of machine noise and sweeping pads all wrestle for attention and keep you on your toes. this is high octane electro and techno designed with metallic precision but oozing plenty of human feelings.

a project 18 months in the making, marcel fengler presents a imf10, a three part compilation series detailing the past, present and future of his label index marcel fengler. part 2 focuses on the warmer and more soulful side of imf and features an outstanding array of artists making their debut for the label, all of which have a strong personal meaning to fengler. there’s fjaak, the exciting berlin trio he admires for their authentic identity and honest sound, a special shed remix of the enigmatic vril whose timeless productions continue to strike a chord with him, good friend eric cloutier who he has long wanted to get involved in imf and of course long-time label champion thomas hessler. viennas arthur robert a new face marcel discovered after he sent him tracks over facebook contributes a beautiful shimmering work to the compilation. highlighting this section of the project is the first azur track marcels new side project. he explains: ive always liked to be diverse with my music, but i also do’t want to confuse people. this is the reason why i decided to give my melodic side its own identity. my music under the marcel fengler name will go back to its roots and be more raw and rough in production terms. the final digital package will be complemented by a dj mix from thomas hessler comprised of tracks from imf10. stay tuned for parts 3 to follow, which includes originals and remixes by marcel fengler, sebastian kramer (aka redshape), luke slater, peter van hoesen and more.

gothenburg based tora vinter brings a sonic journey of two genre defying tracks to bror06, coming from releases on her own my sonic mountain imprint and remix work for fever ray (rabid records). arriving from an impression inspired by female characters of one thousand and one nights, tora starts the ep with the emotive morgiana, presenting minimalist layers of classy percussion over an eight minute bassline workout together with veraluz’s impassioned vocals. following up the a-side is the lush and evocative sheherazade, bringing the listener from atmospheric soundscapes through suggestive drum patterns - featuring a spaced out, stepping remix by dj lily.

after an excellent 12inch on rosten label sstrom drops his first full length otider, which is by far the most diverse offering of the project encompassing elements of different genres and putting them in woolen and dense sonic textures. otider could be loosely translated as un-times or non-times. it positions the tracks out of specific context and rather represents them as some rediscovered artifacts relating to personal experiences of the artist. otider slightly distances sstrom from techno label as the compositions elegantly drift between lush transparency and thick grooves of outsider/lo-fi house as in kronofobi or svvaren or sensitive, yet subtly monolith and mellow techno on damm and i huvudet. in modernisten we can even trace echoes of coldwave/synth aesthetics with melancholic guitars sweeping over hypnotic rhythmic patterns, while closer sov nu introduces something which reminds a darker form of garage music with light synthpads constantly surfacing among raw mechanical beats. all the tracks were created over a relatively long period between 2010 and 2017 by employing the process where he let his hands work automatically without interference from his head. this freedom could be felt across the release, which juggles with different musical forms so lightly and organically, but at the same time maintains a coherent vision, which illustrates the vast scope and diversity of the artist.

2018 repress ... well. where do we start with deep inside ? originally released in the golden nyc house era of 1993, this 5 tracker literally smashed everything in sight. and still does now! the epitome of an evergreen, all-time classic release. masters at work louie vega and kenny dope were on a major roll in this era, producing, remixing, dj-ing and everything in-between, these guys put in ridiculous work. they are joined on this ep by a roll-call of names and collaborators, erick morillo engineering the title track? check. maurice joshua on co-production duties? you got it. vocals by ms. barbara tucker? they re there. killer, rock hard drums? stacks of soul? masterfully chopped up disco samples? all present. serious stuff. sometimes a record just manages to capture and distill the true essence of what this is all about and deep inside is one such record, it bears all the hallmarks of golden era maw, all the signposts of what was happening in nyc s clubs in the early to mid 90 s were there within it s grooves. you know a record is good when it s still being, quite literally, hammered nearly 25 years later! now, remastered, and reissued with the full involvement of strictly rhythm this seminal piece of nyc house history is made available again with all original, full sleeve artwork intact as per the 1993 original. this one s a straight up essential for any self-respecting dance aficionado. you know what to do!

norwegian duo ost & kjex make a welcome return to crosstown rebels. their private dancer ep is a masterclass in producing dance-floor ready rhythms. they welcome fellow norwegian whalesharkattacks to the mix to provide her dark yet dreamy vocals. we had a fascination with tinas private dancer since first being exposed to it by pat sharp on sky trax in the 80s. whalesharkattacks personifies everything thats cool about the 80s, so when we met her we knew we had to cut a version ost & kjex private dancer is as dark as it is melodic, with eerie drum pads and a medley of dreamt synths. norwegian vocalist whalesharkattacks, whose music has been described as 808 goth, lends a distorted vocal. on nightingale a burdenging bass adds a sense of urgency interlaced with vocals reminiscent of the 80s era. cosmic synths float side by side samples of beautiful bird song. a titillating work of art with a mesmerising beat.

mike huckaby, bergqvist, dj sports, raam and lns remix ‘deep soundscapes’, takecha’s album recently released on sweden’s love potion. released in march, the album incorporates takeshi fukushima’s work between 1990 to 2013 and affirms why the producer is such a respected figure within japan’s electronic music scene. now his compositions have been remixed by some of house music’s best, featuring renditions from detroit’s mike huckaby, aniara’s henrik bergqvist, the elusive raam, firecracker and regelbau’s dj sports, as well as wania and freakout cult’s lns. mike huckaby inaugurates the release with his sultry take on ‘low sentiment’, blending deep synths with murmuring vocals to forge a proper deep house cut. bergqvist then remixes ‘rhodes deep’ creating a bouncy minimal cut incorporating the original’s scintillating melody alongside meandering percussion and twisted effects, making way into dj sports’ remix of ‘gradual atmosphere’ with its intricate breakbeat drums and dreamlike atmospherics. raam then reinvents ‘calm imagination’ taking it into subterranean territories complete with infectious keys, until lns ties it all together with her mesmerising beatless reimagining of ‘factory 141’.

it was vladimir ivkovic who introduced me to the world of rex ilusivii. a world where the spirit of a genius holds sway. i remember spending an entire night at vladimir s house in germany, listening to all those recovered pieces, and feeling like i had entered another space-time. mitar tragically left us, one november night in 1999 in brazil, leaving behind an extensive body of work consisting of more than 500 pieces, for the most part never released. being submerged in such a unique universe, so singular, brought me happiness. it also filled me with hope, because i tell myself that today there must be many other outstanding musicians who produce in the shadow of the traditional circuit, just for the pleasure of making music. listening to the music of mitar suboti&#263,, makes you part of his world. he did not stop producing from 1983 to 1999, in different styles, but with an instantly recognizable touch.his music also marries the evolution of recording techniques with new instruments that have appeared over this time, from the tr808 to the digital samplers. it took me more than two years to select the music for this record, as each time i listened to the material it revealed other details and other possibilities. i am extremely happy and honored to present this record to you, in which i try to do justice to the different, versatile- facets of suba.

thoma bulwer returns with jandaze , his latest ep via parasol culture featuring long-time partner in crime anna wall. it follows parasol 001 their first joint vinyl release, that sold out on the shelves gaining support from the likes of mood ii swing and cab drivers plus on the airwaves via nts. their jandaze ep has already been doing the rounds on the dj circuit in hackney wick and beyond. ‘patience’ was the result of a late night jam session with sync boxes, groove benders and the classic tr-909. after much fine-tuning, it’s been tried and tested by cinthie on her recent australia tour and is set to be a staple club cut for this summer. although ‘insouciant’ means a casual lack of concert, a lot of work went into making this one. it’s the most laid-back of the bunch, with smallville-esque juno 106 melodies perfect for the afterparty or warm up session. this goes out to the post-nyd loft party crew in the wick where it was played for the first time. try pronouncing this one at 7am in the morning… ‘fridge speed’ is a minimal house cut influenced by thoma’s garage roots. think rudely placed analogue synth stab melodies, ‘tuff’ skippy drums and big subs ideal for early hours and “it’s a london thing” house sets. ‘egress’ was made with long jam takes from thoma’s modular system. deep, dubby beats, evolving synths and textures make up this track thats been road-tested on the world famous fabric room 1 sound system by voigtmann in his extended set before ricardo villalobos. current support comes from maya jane coles, archie hamilton franck, roger, cinthie, voigtmann, john dimas.

constantin xenakis work possesses exactly what i really love about intelligent electronic music. its stylishly repetitive, coded, mechanical but, at the same time, very organic and playful. this is how argyris theofilis, also known as zodiac free arts club, explains his fascination with european artist constantin xenakis. born in cairo, xenakis work often includes written script, in particular symbols andcodes of everyday life, traffic signs, alchemy, the zodiac, mathematical and chemical symbols, egyptian hieroglyphics as well as letters from the greek, phoenician, hebrew and arabic alphabets.a balance between human and inhuman that makes his art somehow mystical. after becoming fixated by xenakis, the greek music producer searched and eventually met him for the first time in 2012. after several meetings in paris and athens, they both decided to present structures + codes, a concept album conceived as an homage to the painters vision. each one of the eight songs in the album corresponds to a painting by xenakis, translating its intricate shapes and patterns into spirit-lifting compositions filled with elliptic arpeggios, repetitive drum machines and esoteric melodies in proper kosmische manner. but this is not a mere exercise in style. as xenakis paintings, its music that transcends its own codes to become an esoteric experience. this record should be heard comfortably.

the first track on annas debut ep for novamute , razor was born while playing with her roland mks-80, a synth from 1985 and one of annas favourites. you can hear the fat, juicy sound on the breakdown and ever evolving throughout. the track has already been getting a great reaction when played out in her sets. escapism plays with trippy arpeggios that lay down the atmosphere for the whole track, it feels really dense and trippy but still powerful, making use of heavier drum sounds for the groove. the last track on the ep dreamweaver, is a simple track that always works well on the dance floor. anna reworked this track many times before deciding to strip down the beat and focus on the final sequence, sometimes the simple ideas are the ones that work the best.

following the u.s. army’s liberation of munich in may 1945, the world’s first amerikahaus was inaugurated there with a library, a magazine reading room, a children’s library, a record and lm department, and lecture and seminar rooms, together with a concert hall and exhibition space. up to 80.000 people a month utilized the offerings of amerikahaus during its early years. beginning in 1953, the united states information agency (usia), an institution founded as an instrument of the cold war, began to finance amerikahaus. in addition to representing the u.s., its principal task in west germany was to democratize and denazify the postwar population. after the beginning of the cold war, many of these re-educative measures also served as propaganda in a programmatic linking of democratic and economic principles meant to strengthen transatlantic relations against the communist bloc. in 1997, the u.s. government concluded its work at amerikahaus in munich and shipped almost all its items back to the states. however, 1.630 long-playing vinyl records from the library were left behind in cardboard boxes in the basement. when michaela melián looked through this forgotten collection, one of the first things she came across was don gillis’ 1940 tone poem »portrait of a frontier town«, whose second movement is entitled »where the west begins«. don gillis, a composer and radio producer, used the musical styles and genres of that decade to create an explicitly american program music. michaela melián’s »music from a frontier town« is fueled by the diverse sonic material of this extensive record collection once considered as an instrument of cultural education. this record has been produced in addition to melián’s twenty-four hour performative music installation »music from a frontier town« in the garage of what is now the bavarian center for transatlantic relations at karolinenplatz, munich (4-5 may 2018).

crown of brahma are charles stella, nicole willis & daniel wyatt. the songs “an angel on my shoulder” & “and i’ll be free as a bird” were recorded in the period between 1995-1997, originally set for release on an lp on rawkus records in 1997. this album would have followed the release of the group, repercussions, album charmed life (pony canyon, 1997). nicole willis was the lead singer / songwriter of this group. charles stella & daniel wyatt worked together at temple of soul in new york city, where some of charmed life was also recorded. these two vocal tracks have never been commercially released, however were heard by tommi grönlund of sähkö recordings and leftfield, who requested to work with ms willis in result. the two tracks have been remastered in 2017 by charles stella.

london based artist ben vince is best known for his minimal & transcendent saxophone soundscapes. with assimilation we find ben treading new ground with his recorded output, moving away from the limitations of solo saxophone, instead embracing collaboration and communication to forge new paths. whilst vince’s sax work still undeniably holds ‘assimilation’ together, the new territories explored by working with an artistically diverse range of collaborators allows new life and influence to flow through ben’s work. the album features collaborations with micachu (mica levi), rupert clervaux, merlin nova, valentina magaletti, and cam deas. ben vince has also recently collaborated on a 12inch with joy o (forthcoming on hessle audio).

!k7 are pleased to announce forest swords as the next curator of the ever essential dj-kicks series. following acclaimed albums on ninja tune and tri angle, soundtrack and installation work, and remixes of the likes of bjork, matthew barnes aka forest swords has curated a 25-track compilation that draws a line between past inspirations and his current peers. like much of his own output, his dj-kicks skirts around pristine electronics and embraces more organic textures: 80s post punk (anna domino, dead can dance), classic 90s british electronica (orbital, mira calix), and smokey digi-dub (rhythm & sound), all rub up alongside some of the most forward-facing producers working today (demdike stare, laurel halo, fis). the compilation sifts through rhythms, shifting speeds and emotions: from pop icon neneh cherrys primal thudding to the zombified throb of exclusive forest swords track crow via deena abdelwaheeds clattering deconstructions to the euphoric two-step of djrum. its a collection of tracks that feels as restlessly curious and weighty as barnes own work. the double vinyl release includes a download code.

2018 repress of the debut full length lp from spencer doran and ryan carlile s visible cloaks project. initially recorded in 2013 and issued on cassette by sun ark in 2014 (as cloaks), this first offering uses conceptual processes to weave many of the same threads as their later work, synthetic fm tones, tuned mallet percussion, and electronically modulated voice, all arranged in a gossamer web, spun with neon electronics. on this release the duo set off on the sonic journey they are still on today, refracting their influences through east-west feedback loops, augmenting traditions with technology. remastered 45rpm dmm version with additional surprises!

the chisa years: 1965–1975 (rare and unreleased) is a compilation album by south african jazz trumpeter hugh masekela. the album consists of 14 rare or forgotten tracks recorded by stewart levine and hugh masekela from 1965 to 1975 when they ran their own chisa records label. thom jurek of allmusic wrote “in sum, there isn’t a weak moment on this entire collection. it’s appeal is wide and deep and one can only hope this is the first of many volumes of this material to appear. bbe records has done a stellar job in making this slab available.” dan nishimoto of the prefix magazine stated “the compilation focuses on masekela’s original idea of “african american music.” from the early experiments of the zulus (a group featuring m’bulu) in mixing doo-wop, rhythm & blues and south african gospel and the mbaqanga/”grazing in the grass”-style work of the generically named johannesburg street band to the clearly fela-influenced ojah (masekela’s band in the mid-’70s, consisting of players from ghana and nigeria) and the readyfor-primetime belting of m’bulu, each track reveals a multi-pronged effort to find and challenge the notion(s) of how african and american cultural forms could interact.”

2018 repress - bicep make their way home to feel my bicep records for their first 12” on the imprint since their collaborative ‘dahlia’, recorded with hammer, back in september of 2015. fmb006 is a notable addition to the label - a reimagining of blaze’s seminal recording ‘lovelee dae’ - originally released on classic back in 1997, before a string of subsequent re-issues and remix packages on playhouse, true and urban tracks that included carl craig and 20:20 vision. the remix was originally designed to be included in their essential mix in 2014, but a lack of space has meant that its pressing on fmb is the first time it sees the light of day. using ralph lawson and carl finlow’s classic aforementioned acapella version as the basis of their work, the bicep lads ensnare an air of swooning euphoria in their remix that stays true to both their original productions and their dj sets. shortened vocals suffuse galloping 909s and a gleaming synth riff that certify it as a festival fail safe

taking inspiration from music, nature and the elements that surround them, jukka hänninen and mika hanka aka shuffless have quickly garnered the attention of many within house and techno since making their production debut in 2016. written at the vislampi studio, located in ruutana city, finland, using a combination of hardware gear from the likes of roland, korg and arturia, here we see the duo reveal their latest work with four diverse and expansive cuts set for release this spring as they return to syncrophone s in-house imprint. opening up the ep, hänninen and hanka fluently introduce chi , a complex and evolving cut that effortlessly fuses deep, rich chords, and delicate, skipping hi-hats, before easing into the flowing groove of lahti with its jazz-tinged melodies and heady tones guiding the production into lighter territories. on the flip, nime Ñvailla introduces a matrix of hazy textures amongst crunchy percussion licks and dubbed out atmospherics as the duo return to deeper, darker realms, before title cut puollaskel punctuates the package in classy fashion, laying down gritty analog percussion, resounding kicks and subtly programmed nuances to conclude an excellently worked ep.

born in cameroon, vicky began banging the drums at the age of 9. by 13 he had moved onto bass and within a couple of years he was playing every night from 10pm to 5am in the castel douala cabaret. at the age of 19 vicky moved to paris to study banking and commerce and cram in even more music. he took classes at Épinay-sur-seine conservatoire music school and it was here that he met bandmates of his dikalo project. word spreads and he soon becomes one of the most sought after bass players in the afro arena. his session work features on many scenes stars, manu dibango, eko tala am, kemayo, sammy massamba, toto guillaume and many more. a chance meeting with the gibson brothers also see him play on two of their hit albums. in the 80s vicky moved to the us for spell and excels as a session bassist and touring musician. we pick up the story in 1981. with his stature as a musician and bass player riding high he takes a detour to nigeria to record with the afrodisia label in lagos. the thank u mamma album is the result. it is repressed for the first time, here in 2018 on the revitalised afrodisia label. musical proceedings open up with the heartfelt ode to his mother thank u mamma, smooth pop meets afrobeat boogie. marina driv slows things down with its smoldering jazz. side two opens with its not serious a catchy vocal number underpinned with funky guitars and striding basslines. stormy rain is lazy guitar jazz swansong. we close off the album with the ever so funky you. slick funk grooves powered along with a dose of slap bass. as a side note vicky actually plays left handed but with a upside down right handed bass. this upside-down precursor making his effortless slap playing even more impressive. vicky went on to record a two other albums and still tours and plays as an ever-in-demand session musician.
